We use this method for non-standard glass sliding door openings or when it is required in a certain position on an end wall and a mullion is in the way. I have personally actioned requests for these openings myself for multiple franchises on a very regular basis.
Things to consider:
- This is for Glass Sliding Doors only. This needs to be sent through as a ticket for the design team to review on a case by case basis.
- This will change the building to an OPEN CPI.
- Additional engineering is required if a customer wishes to use a roller/sectional door from another supplier, tilt doors, top hung doors (French stacking, bi-fold, barn doors, etc.) or a hinged door as these all put additional loads on the members.
- When requesting a roller/sectional door that Steelx is unable to supply, engineering documents from that supplier must be provided to SCE when requesting engineering.
- Roller doors that we can supply from our supply chain, must be ordered through SMS.

Hi Sam,
This one is a little bit of a tricky one. The current work around at the moment is to;
- Insert a roller door to the opening size required
- Export the quote through support
- The design team will remove the roller door itself from the quote and when it turns into an order, we will do a plan modification.
This is currently the quickest and most effective way to do it but I have listed it down as a potential future project.

Will Bristow: thanks Will, I was of the understanding we could not remove roller doors to create an opening. Has this changed?

Will Bristow: Hi Will -yes curious on this one we were told we can't do that anymore...

Sam Didio: Tammy Maurer:
hmmm that's news to me. Could you let me know who advised of this?
We use this method quite often for odd size sliding doors as well as on gable ends where mullions interfere for sliding door locations.

Sam Didio: could be the norm for Wide span but not for TSC

Will Bristow: We were also not allowed to remove roller doors from the job. Had to pay an engineering fee I believe about $500, had to wait 4 + weeks for Sharp engineering (Not allowed to use any other engineer)
All because we wanted to use a local roller door supplier due to all the issues we are having. So if this is a tactic that is being used, very disappointing....

Michael Pelda: Hi Michael,
If you wanted to use a roller from another supplier, additional engineering is required.
Our buildings are designed around the engineering specs supplied by each of the manufacturers within our supply network. They are not all the same unfortunately.

Sam Didio: Hey Sam,
Could you give me an example of what kind of openings customers are trying to achieve? Are these openings for the use of GSD's?
M
Michael Pelda
Will Bristow: Thank you for your reply Will.
To better understand your reply, the building is engineered differently depending on the supplier of the roller door?
Is a glass sliding door determined to be a better replacement compared to another roller door from another supplier?
As you stated, perfectly fine to replace roller door with glass sliding door (Standard Practice) but absolutely huge no to replace it with another roller door.
We simply wanted our local Steel-line store to either supply directly to site or possibly supply & fit.

Will Bristow: for GSD we use the standard openings that are on SMS. Sometimes customers want to supply their own doors, be it, barn doors, stable doors, glass doors, double wood entrance doors, an opening with no doors - but finished with flashing etc. It would be good just to have the option of creating a custom opening. What the customer does with it, then becomes their responsibility. If SMS then makes the building design/engineering as if its not using a wind rate door or an open bay, would this then not achieve the desired outcome.

So what you're telling me is we have to go through SCE? And pay them to QUOTE. Which means we still use our own engineer..... because we don't pay for quotes. It used to be absolutely no cost to us before Steelx came. Then the ability was completely taken away. Then SCE came along.
